Fabio Capello’s men recorded their latest win after winning the opening two qualifying matches of the tournament against Northern Ireland and Israel national teams respectively.
The fact that Russia managed to retain the top-spot on their respective group table after defeating the Navigators in the qualifying round of the competition for the first time in their history gives Capello a reason to cheer.
Capello, who replaced d**k Advocaat after the Dutch tactician failed to help the team in reaching the later rounds at Euro 2012, praised his side and urged them to extend their decent run in the ongoing tournament.
The Italian tactician believes that his side deserves all the plaudits for their recent performance against a difficult opponent.
The former Real Madrid manager credited the entire side for their virtuoso display in the tournament, saying that they bettered the opposition who had been troubling them for long in the past.
“We saw knew that Portugal will give us a tough time. But, at the same time, I am pleased to say that the Russian team that played with great desire, dedication and fighting spirit. These qualities, desire to fight and win, was
pumped up by the fans at the stadium. They played a massive role in helping us to win the match.” The Copa del Rey winner was quoted as saying.
Capello went on to shower praise on his team’s defenders, who stopped from scoring a goal or creating an opportunity for the goal.
“We denied him from taking the ball and managed to stop him to pick up speed and go in the middle to hit on target from his right foot.” He said.
Russia will now play the next qualifying match against at Luzhniki stadium on Tuesday.
