Bixente Lizarazu plays down Bayern Munich’s chances of winning the Champions League- UCL news
Former Bayern Munich defender Bixente Lizarazu has played down the club’s chances of winning the UEFA Champions League this season claiming the Barcelona and Real Madrid are the real contenders. He insisted that there are many
teams which are stronger than Bayern Munich and admitted that it would be very difficult to achieve that target.
Die Bayern have been in sensational form this season and have lost only once in all competitions. They came through the qualifying play-offs defeating FC Zurich and are now leading Group-A with six points, having already defeated and Manchester City.
Lizarazu admitted that it would be very difficult for Bayern to win the Champions League this season as he rated Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid as the favourites to lift the trophy. He insisted that Bayern are on par
with the likes of Manchester United, AC Milan and Chelsea and could pull up a surprise in the end, if they continue playing like this.
“I doubt if they can do it this season, because for me Still, if they keep producing
the goods they can go a long way, for sure,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to
The former French international hailed the club’s performances in the current campaign but admitted that the team falters in defence frequently and needs a world-class central defender.
However, he praised the impact Jupp Heynckes has made at the club since arriving in the summer and is confident that the Bavarians will win the Bundesliga title at the end of the season.
“Bayern Munich are certainly looking impressive at the moment. But there's a long way to go yet this season. I think they're still lacking a truly world-class central defender though,” he concluded.
Bixente Lizarazu has played for some of the best teams in Europe in his career. He played for French duo Bordeaux and Olympique Marseille and had a brief spell in with Athletic Bilbao before playing for Bayern Munich.
