Spencer Levin shares the second spot at the Memorial Tournament after the first round
Spencer Levin carded a five-under par 67 in the opening round of the Memorial Tournament to share the second spot on the leaderboard on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
Overall, it was overall an interesting round recorded by Levin, which included six birdies and an eagle against a bogey and a double bogey each.
He started on the back nine of the course and managed to score three birdies prior to the double bogey on the par-three 16th hole.
“It was a good day. I just had some good things happen early in the round, some nice par saves, and I doubled 16, hit it in the water,” Levin said.
The front-nine performance was quite impressive as he recorded three birdies and an eagle through 17 holes (No.8), which took him to the top of the leaderboard.
“I hit a good drive and then hit a 3-wood right in the middle of the green,” he talked about the eagle.
“Those are two of the best swings I made all day pretty much. And then I was feeling good with the putter, had a relatively straight putt. It was just an outside left putt straight up the hill, and I hit it perfect and it went in, and all of a sudden you're
5-under, and it's pretty cool”.
However, a bogey on the final hole forced him to go back on the second place shared with Erik Compton.
According to Levin, he started to gain some momentum on the front nine of the course. Yet, to end the round on a bogey really made him feel disappointed in the end, especially, when he had really good scores on the last few holes.
In the meantime, Scott Stallings recorded a six-under par 66 to take the first spot on the leaderboard.
He carded a total of six birdies and an eagle against two bogeys to take a one-stroke lead over Compton and Levin.
The world number one Luke Donald and number two Rory McIlroy both carded a one-under par 71 each to share the 20th position with 13 other players.
The highlights of McIlroy’s performance include a triple bogey on the par-three 12th hole and an eagle on the par-five fifth hole.
