Chelsea holds off spirited Reading to claim 4-2 win

0 LIKES UnLike Di Matteo’s Chelsea staved off a possible threat of an upset in the first half, by scoring three late goals to clinch an enthralling 4-2 win over Reading in a Premier League match on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge. only minutes later. Against all the odds, the visitors then grabbed the lead in the 29thminute,
after Guthrie’s free-kick somehow managed to find the back of the net.
However, goals from in the second half helped the Blues bag three points out of the game, and go to the summit of the table.
The home side started the proceedings ominously, with the new signing,, dragging a shot off target in the second minute, after collecting a neat pass from Juan Mata.
Minutes later, the Blues came close of opening the scoring through Ramires. The Brazilian International was sent clear after a good interplay between Torres and Ivanovic. However, his ensuing shot was palmed away by Adam Federici.
Reading then launched their first real attack of the game, as Pogrebnyak threatened to hit the visitors on the counter. However, he ballooned his shot well off target.
After constantly knocking the ball around the Royals box, the Blues finally managed to draw first blood. Hazard was tripped inside the box by Gunter, and the referee Lee Mason had no hesitation in pointing towards the spot.
Lampard blasted the spot kick into the bottom left corner of the goal to put his side ahead.
Nonetheless, the advantage proved to be short-lived, as the visitors obliterated the lead in the 25th minute. Garath McCleary sent a probing cross inside the box from the right wing, which was splendidly met by the Russian, who beat
with a perfectly placed header in the top left corner.
Only four minutes later, the home crowd were left shell shocked, as Brian McDermott’s men claimed the lead through Guthrie.
Cech made a mess out of an average free-kick from the midfielder, failing to hold on to a weak shot, with the ball eventually ending up in the back of the net.
Getting increasingly desperate for the equalizing goal, Di Matteo introduced respectively during the second period.
After piling attack after attack, finally managed to get level on terms in the 69th minute.
Cahill belted a powerful shot from outside the area, which was enough to beat the goalkeeper.
Buoyed up after bagging the equalizer, the hosts went for the kill. And it was Torres who provided them with the breakthrough. The Spaniard tapped the ball in for a simple finish, after getting a good low pass from right at his feet.
However, the replays suggested that the striker may well have been in an off side position.
With the game having approached its dying stages, Reading won a corner kick. Goalkeeper, Federici, came inside the Chelsea box in an attempt to salvage a point for his team. However, in doing so, he allowed his opponents to score their fourth goal, as the
Blues launched a quick counter, and the move culminated with Ivanovic tapping the ball inside an open goal.
The win lifted the Blues at the top of the league table, after having won both of their opening games. They will next square-off against Newcastle United on Saturday.
