Bradley Wiggins wins the fifth stage of the Volta ao Algarve while Richie Porte seals the overall victory at the race
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky Procycling secured the final stage at the Volta ao Algarve 2012 after his remarkable performance at the 25.8 kilometre chase to Portimao.
The British rider secured his first victory of the season and also finished third overall at the race.
He took a total time of 32 minutes and 48 seconds to bag the stage win while Tony Martin and Richie Porte grabbed the second and the third spots.
Porte of Team Sky Procycling sealed the overall victory at the race. He also won the 194.6 kilometre stage 3 of the race on February 17th, 2012.
The Australian was targeting the overall classifications right from the start of the race. The third stage win helped him with a strong grip on the final general classifications.
He admitted the efforts by his team-mates after the stage win, "It wasn't hard with that team. They were incredible! You don't really want to single out one person as they were all incredible”.
“You see Zandio and Kosta on the front the whole day. It was a hard stage and they got dropped but then they come back with bidons and food with 60k to go. For me that just shows what this team is all about”, he continued.
The 27-year-old joined Team Praties right from the start of his career in 2008 and stayed with the team until 2009. He accepted an offer from David Brailsford’s team in 2010 and represented Team Saxo Bank from 2010 to 2011.
Porte decided to continue his 2012 season with the British side and penned a deal with Team Sky. He helped the team with a perfect start and welcomed the New Year in a terrific fashion by climbing the podium on the final day of racing.
Spanish cyclist Raul Alarcon of Team Efapel-Glassdrive won the sprint classifications while Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky Procycling dominated the Points classifications.
Team Sky was declared as the best team of the race and it topped the team’s classifications.
Lotto Belisol Team, Movistar Team, Vacansoleil-DCM and Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step secured the next four spots after the end of final general classifications.
