Sergio Garcia aims third Spanish victory through the Volvo World Match Play Championship – Golf News
Sergio Garcia is aiming another victory in Spain to complete his hat-trick when he will tee off at the Volvo World Match Play Championship on May 17, 2012.
Garcia won the last two events that he played in his native country, Spain, last year. His first victory came in the Castello Masters, when he ruthlessly defeated Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño with an 11-stroke margin.
The very next week witnessed him taking another victory at the Andalucía Masters, defeating Miguel Ángel Jiménez with a one-stroke margin.
Other than Garcia, a number of top-notch players including Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie, Justin Rose, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel, Brandt Snedeker, John Senden and Camilo Villegas have all confirmed entries for the Finca Cortesin
near Marbella.
"It is tough to qualify for such an elite field, so I am delighted to have won my place," said Garcia.
According to Garcia, he is in a good shape and confident to make a good run in the event. Moreover, his Match Play format skills make him a strong contender in an event that will witness him playing in front of his home crowd.
"I am hitting the ball really well and the confidence is coming, so I am looking forward to playing at Finca Cortesin very much," he said.
"As everyone knows, I love match play and even more I love playing in Spain in front of my home fans, so I think this will be a great week for me".
The Masters Tournament was the last tournament that witnessed him displaying his skills on the course. He tied for the 12th position after carding a two-under par tournament score.
Therefore, he is currently considered a favourite for the tournament scheduled next month.
According to the format of the event, there will be a total of 24 players divided in eight different groups. They will contend against each other on Thursday and Friday in the format of round-robin games.
Two top players from each group will then head into the final knockout round, where 16 players will play according to their scores while moving forward in the tournament.
