Queensland’s tennis legend, Roy Emerson was privileged by Brisbane tournament officials that honoured the tournament trophy on his name. Roy Emerson is one of the tennis legends that accomplished number of records in his professional
tennis career and is regarded to be one of the best tennis players of 20th century.
He has won 12 Grand Slam titles in singles tournaments and 16 men’s doubles Grand Slam titles. His record of 28 Grand Slam titles has never been broken to date. He is the fourth player to have won all four Grand Slam titles in
singles and doubles category. His record of 12 single Grand Slam titles was intact until Pete Sampras surpassed his record with 14 Grand Slam titles and now Roger Federer holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles with 16 trophies to his name.
The honorary announcement ceremony of was attended by one of the best tennis players of their eras that comprised of Rod Laver, Ashley Cooper, Mal Anderson and Pat Rafter joined Emerson at Pat Rafter Arena.
Brisbane trophy was named as Roy Emerson trophy and was presented by Cooper and Rafter, who took Queensland to the new heights of tennis. Cooper was extremely happy on naming the trophy to Roy Emerson’s name and said “It’s wonderful
to have Roy for the naming of the Roy Emerson Trophy. Queensland has such a rich tennis history and it’s only appropriate that we recognise Roy’s contribution to the sport in our state in this way.”
Emerson was ecstatic to receive such honour and said “It’s a tremendous honour to have the Brisbane International trophy named after me. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be recognised in this way.”
Australian tennis legend also added that it is good to such events taking place on regular intervals as it helps in promoting this game in local public and especially those who are training this sport since their childhood. This
tournament will definitely help boost their morale and provide them an opportunity to witness their idols in front of their eyes, live.
Queensland hero holds the record to have won Australian Open for the record six times and no player has been able to surpass that record to date. Roger Federer has won the Australian Open for four times in his career and it will
require another 2 titles to equal the tally with legendary Emerson.
