FIFA 2010 World Cup: Argentinean Coach Diego Maradona not sure about his future

Argentina had a good World Cup even though they were whipped mercilessly in the last match against Germany by 4-0 with first blood coming at the 3rd minute and the last goal coming at the 89th minute. The end of the match even saw the pompous Diego Maradona accept that his side was humiliated.

Germany comfortably went out as winners in Cape Town. Thomas Mueller scored a goal setting the score as the earliest goal scored in this World Cup. Arne Friedrich bagged his first World Cup goal by a dazzling play by him and Miroslav Klose scored another two in the second half.

It was only a day before that Brazil was sent home packing by the Netherlands and now Argentina is leaving South Africa too. It can be said that this World Cup has indeed seen more than its fair share of World Cup upsets.

When the Argentinean team got to the stadium they were confident and enthusiastic which was seen very clearly as the team came dancing and singing out of the team bus like they had already won the match. Even before the game started Maradona’s side seemed confident that they would be continuing on after this match in this World Cup.

Maradona told the press that everything changed after the first goal. He said, the Argentinean team made it easier for them after the first goal and nothing can change the fact that it was a good game by Germany and they studied their opponents well.

The Argentinean Coach continued by telling the press that “we” let them play and then the Germans took full advantage of that, they did things that they had not done before, and in the end he said that the result did not reflect on what was happening on the field so that is why it does affect his pride.

Maradona wanted to thank his team and all the coaches and the players who stuck by their side. He said that the dream did not come true just yet but they enjoyed the journey and all of this shows what true Argentinean football is all about.

Lionel Messi is going home without even once scoring a goal in this World Cup but still the Argentinean coach had kind words for him. Though Messi has been extremely disappointing, as the goal scoring machine he normally is, but that was due to his displaced position in the team. He was forced to play more and more on the wing and in the midfield and when that is considered his performance came up pretty good in the World Cup.

Maradona expressed that it was awful watching Messi cry in the dressing room and that he played a great World Cup but whenever he tried to score the opposing team would always stop him. In the end Maradona commented on the subject by saying that the people who say that Messi did not play for the shirt “are stupid”.

Diego was also asked if he will continue his post as a coach after the world cup. In reply he said that he had not yet given the subject much thought, and he needed to consider all his options and that Argentina should maintain their attacking style regardless who the coach is.

Diego also said that he is out of energy and may as well go even tomorrow but what is actually important is that Argentina shows the world that they play without any concern or fear.

He said that they need to think over what they are going to do now and he has no idea of what he himself will do. Maradona added that the players need to talk it over with family and friends and he knew that above all football is about the fans and pleasing them, going for the win and Argentina does exactly that.
