Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Del Mar, an exciting battle is on the cards
The Yellow Ribbon Stakes has always been an entertaining event, and this year will be no exception. A thrilling contest is on the cards, as plenty of powerful runners will step into the Grade 2 meeting in pursuit of a purse worth $250,000.
Last year’s contest was held at Santa Anita, where Dubawi Heights demonstrated a splendid show to grab the top prize. It was certainly a nail-biting clash, as every single runner tried hard to become the ultimate champion.
Luck eventually turned in favour of Dubawi Heights, who grabbed the first place in the hands of Joel Rosario. Simon Callaghan’s charge, however, had to unleash her best in order to thrive, as Cozi Rosie and Harmonious gave her a lot of hard time. Despite
a tough competition, the mare did not lose her confidence and maintained the highest standards.
The 2010 Yellow Ribbon Stakes was also won by a mare. Held at Betfair Hollywood Park, the 1¼-mile event saw Hibaayeb showing a magnificent performance.
Saeed bin Suroor’s 5-year-old was dominant all the way through, giving her rivals no chance whatsoever. The spectators witnessed a close battle among Hibaaye, Turning Top and Gypsy's Warning. After a lot of breathtaking moments, the Godolphin-owned managed
to surpass her major opponents, ensuring the first place in a great fashion.
The third last edition of the big meeting was hosted by Santa Anita. It was full of thrill and drama. Magical Fantasy emerged as star of the show, as she beat the likes of Visit and Black Mamba to seize the first place.
It was a magical victory for Patrick Gallagher’s trainee, who handled the situation quite nicely to keep herself prominent right through the race. Under Alex Solis, the mare ran furiously to inflict plenty of pressure on her rivals and consequently, grabbed
the first spot with ease.
The history shows that it has always been an interesting race. Trainer Robert J. Frankel has won this race five times since 1990. Todd Pletcher also tasted success twice in the recent years.
The mega event is scheduled to be held at Del Mar this year, where the conditions will be different than Santa Anita. With a lot of high profile runners likely to join the party, a fascinating contest is in the offing.
