It was kind of strange. I discovered this author Coal Corby who writes fantasy. So I started wondering. Corby sounds to me like the Gaelic Corbie, meaning raven. Is there a similar meaning to the other name, Coal? The best I came up with was that it kind of sounded like "Cole" but still, I never came across such a name and got curious. Any ideas what it could mean?

  1. Without doing a l**k of research.

I'd say Scots, welsh, or some sort of Brit from either coal country in the US, Australia, or England.  I know that Colby is a town in England involved in Steel production, so I guess I find it easy to imagine a guy naming his kid coal either there or somewhere he immigrated to.

Maybe I just like the idea of a kid named Coal, rather than someone misspelling Cole or Colin.

  2. Cole can also be taken from the Celitc/Greek 'Cole',  a short name for 'Nicolas 'meaning: Victory of the People

  3. Coal - black

    Black Raven.

Just a guess.  If that's what it means, I think it's fairly clever.
