  7. A japanese magnetic levitation train (MagLev) hit 581 km/h (361 mph) in 2003, followed by the french "wheels & rails" TGV which hit 574.8 km/h (357 mph) on april 3, 2007. These are just "records" done with "test trains", nothing to see with regular service speed.

    Top speed in regular service is 431 km/h on the Shanghai airport MagLev while the fastest TGV regularly runs at 320 km/h one the new line recently open between Paris and Germany. The spanish AVE, similar to the french TGV, is planned to run up to 350km in regular service on the new line under construction north of spain to the french border.

    France's famous high-speed train, the TGV, broke its 17-year-old world speed record today when it hit a top speed of 357.2 mph.

  20. French TGV approaches 250 mph in regular service.  The first line was 186 mph, not 157 mph as another poster wrote - I believe that was actually the speed of the bullet train, though it later increased it's top speed.

    For comparison, Amtrak reaches 150 mph, but only briefly between New York and Boston.
