Washington Wizards yet to decide on the fate of Maurice Evans and Brian Cook – NBA News
The Washington Wizards have not been having a great deal of luck lately, and their performance has also been on the downfall for the past few seasons. This year, the Wizards made their fourth consecutive lottery appearance, and
made some roster changes during the offseason and free agency in order to make themselves better as a team and improve their performance. The Wizards parted ways with Rashard Lewis and also let go Andray Blatche, bringing back only 1 of six free agents for
next season.
This means veterans Maurice Evans and Brian Cook are unemployed as of now, but both are receiving interest from the Wizards. Cook was acquired by the Wizards from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange of Nick Young at the trade
deadline, and has been extended an invitation to training camp. Both parties are also talking about a non guaranteed one year contract for Cook.
Cook averaged 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds in 16 games for the Wizards last season. He is looking forward to playing in the NBA next season.
“You never know in this business. I’m just going to keep on working like I do every summer, come into training camp trying to win a position. I’ll work my tail off, and come back in great shape and be ready for another one,” said
Cook at the end of last season.
Evans averaged 4.9 points in 24 games last season, and was sparingly used by the team. At 33, Evans was considered for different roles within the organization both as a player and an assistant, even for a front office job. He graduated
with a degree in education from the University of Texas in 2011, but said recently that he wants to continue playing basketball in the NBA.
“I see myself in that kind of role. I just don’t see it quite yet. I still have value as a player and look forward to playing this season,” said Evans about an executive role while talking to USA Today recently.
The Wizards are looking to rise in the Eastern Conference, with former number one pick John Wall in the roster. However, they have a lot of work to do in terms of roster additions as well as player development if they want to end
their drought of playoff appearances.
