Shergar Cup preview
The meeting at Ascot kicks off with the Barclays Shergar Cup Dash where Prohibit appears to have a good chance.
Although he has not won for seven starts the four of those have shown a consistent level of form that suggests that the application of cheekpieces. Two successive good runs over course and distance are backed up by a third in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.
The Titanic Quarter Shergar Cup Classic has plenty with winning form but Christopher Wren may still be on the right side of the handicapper. He went up 6lbs for what was only a short-head win at Newbury last month but he was surely value for more.
Having been held off of what was a muddling pace, he was then stopped in his run and the bit slipped right through his mouth so it was an impressive performance when he did get a break and led in the last 75 yards and the form of his previous run – when four-and-a-quarter lengths sixth to Dandino in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot – has been franked several times since. 

Benandonner (pictured) won Les Ambassadeurs Club Shergar Cup Mile two years ago and has been getting back to that level of form in recent runs. Did not get the breaks in a rather rough race at Goodwood last week but still managed to finish a close fourth.
Anton Marcus, the South African champion jockey, admitted that the to that which he is used to but he has drawn a Mark Johnston runner who is not a front-runner in the St Hallett Shergar Cup Stayers.
Lady Eclair filly has never finished worse than fourth in 11 career runs and her winning streak of three was only interrupted at Glorious Goodwood when she was tried beyond two miles for the first time. She was ridden perhaps a little more conservatively than before and this drop back to 16 furlongs looks ideal and similarly the Johnston-trained Emerging Artist could well find the 12-furlong Michael Page International Shergar Cup Challenge just right.
In the concluding Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint Andrew Balding’s Fireback is better than his last run and is worth another chance.
