Sania Mirza hits the career-high of ranking of world number seven in doubles category – Tennis News
Sania Mirza, the only women tennis superstar from the sub-continent to make a name in the tennis world, achieves yet another milestone in her professional tennis career by breaking into the Top-10 rankings of the world in
doubles category. She is ranked at the seventh spot after her semi-final finish in the Australian Open doubles category. She teamed up with the runners-up of the mixed doubles category contestant, Elena Vesnina of Russia.
Mirza and Vesnina fought extremely hard in the semi-finals of the Australian Open against the Russian duo of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva, who were crowned as the champions later in the tournament. They pushed the
match into three-sets but couldn’t survive the guile of the Russians. The outstanding performance of the Indian tennis ace throughout the year’s first Grand Slam tournament helped her to jump four ranks from the eleventh spot to break into the Top-10 players
in doubles category.
Her dream of playing Olympics 2012 is around the corner and she needs to work hard and sustain that position until June 21, 2012 to make a direct entry into the Olympics tournament 2012, contested in London. She looks determinant
in holding on to that spot and her lengthy injury-layoff didn’t cause a lot of damage to her over game play. She had couple of knee operations by the end of 2011 and was prescribed bed rest; for that reason she couldn’t participate in the events but her comeback
shows her hunger to win titles and perform for her nation.
Mirza’s dismal performance in the singles category of the Australian Open slipped her ranking to 111th spot from 106th and she will have to end up in the Top-64 players of the
world by the midst of June in order to get a direct entry to London Olympics, otherwise Indian Tennis Federation will call for a wildcard entry for their showstopper.
It must a very delightful experience for her, cruising into the Australian Open semi-finals after such a long injury lay-off. Maria Sharapova is another player who showed her talent and class in the singles category, making
it to the finals of the Australian Open after staying out of action for the most parts of the 2011 season due to a chronic ankle and shoulder injury.
Players with such immense ability to absorb pressure and make a remarkable comeback are always a good sign especially for their fans and country. Mirza is looking to grow in confidence and make sure that she climbs higher
than her career-high ranking at the moment.
