The Bayer Leverkusen sporting director reckons that Werkself might not be able to withstand the pressure of overtaking Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in the coming years.
Rudi Voller fears a tough journey ahead for his side, and feels that Leverkusen will find it hard to beat Dortmund or Munich to gain the top spot. He reckons that both the top clubs have enough quality in their ranks and that they
will only get better in the future.
Voller added that the BayArena outfit does not have any big names in their squad apart from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Ballack-c25270 who will also leave by the end of this campaign. Ballack’s contract will expire at the end of the season, and he has already
insisted on ending his career outside http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904.
The Sporting Director believes that Leverkusen’s biggest challenge would be to finish third this season. He feels that Werkself cannot match Bayern or Dortmund’s quality and it will be appropriate for them to try concentrating
on a third-place finish on the table to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
While talking to Rheinische Post, the 51-year-old further mentioned:
"We will try and frustrate them (Dortmund and Bayern) now and again, but we are generally only going to be able to finish between third and seventh. We always have the ambition of qualifying for Europe, but that alone is a difficult
task since we are competing with the likes of Schalke, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart or Wolfsburg, to name but a few."
Leverkusen are currently sixth on the league table with 26 points from 17 games, 11 points adrift of the current leaders, Bayern Munich. Robin Dutt’s men will have to finish at least in the top four in order to earn themselves
a ticket to Europe’s premier club competition.
On the other hand, Voller also spoke in favour of under pressure manager, Robin Dutt. He stated that the former Freiburg boss will stay at the club until his contract expires. Voller mentioned that Dutt has the support of the clubs
and his players and that he will continue with his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684.
“We have told him to keep doing it his way because he has our support. We don't pick our coaches in Leverkusen based on the results of a poll," Voller concluded.
Dutt’s next test will be against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/1-FSV-Mainz-05-c38166 on Sunday, January 22, at BayArena.
