Question:

Red ring around entire belly button piercing?

Okay so I got my belly button pierced August 10th and now it's the 21st and a red ring has formed all around the piercing, and not just around the points where the ring enters my body, but around the entire piercing. There is no puss or irregular colored discharge. I've been doing what the guy who pierced it said, I clean it about 3 times a day with soap and water and I make sure I wash my hands really well before I clean it. The site isn't hot or anything like a normally infected area would be but I don't know, I'm scared it's getting infected or that my body's rejecting the piercing. I'll admit, yesterday I noticed the inside of my actual belly button was a little dirty so I cleaned it with the Skin So Soft oil and I'm wondering if that's what caused the irritation and if i should be concerned? I'm not planning on using the oil anymore, and to just keep using soap and water, but is their anything I should do?

  1. It's hard to give advice when you can't see the skin irritation.

Depending on what you've been using to clean it, your skin may be allergic to the soap you're using.

It is a good sign that the area isn't hot to touch as you would suspect an infection.

I would recommend showing it to a pharmacist and, if you've experienced a reaction to the soap or are experiencing a form of dermatitis from cleaning the area regularly, they might give you a cortisone cream to apply (such as Dermaid) and will probably recommend a moisturiser.

    Good luck!
