New York Yankees defeat Boston Red Sox 3-2 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees did not require more than one inning to mark the series-opener to their name against the Boston Red Sox with a 3-2 victory at Fenway Park in Boston on Friday, August 5.
Yankees were trailing 2-0 when their bat started swinging in the top of the sixth inning. Curtis Granderson singled to centre, allowing Eduardo Nunez to score spell-breaking one run. Robinson Cano followed with his double play to help Derek Jeter tie the
game at two-all. Then Nick Swisher touched a double to shallow left, scoring Granderson for the lead generating run.
"Bases loaded; there's no room for error on Boone's part. That's a huge statement," Girardi said. "It's a big win, to be able to come from behind when Lester was dealing; to be able to scratch three runs across by some great at-bats, that was a big win for
us."
Yankees’ relief pitchers kept the strong squad of the Red Sox under constant pressure with their gritty sinkers. Rafael Soriano and David Robertson each tossed eleven pitches long innings to completely shatter the Red Sox confidence. The Yankees’ star closer
Mariano Rivera carried the impetus in the ninth and worked one-hitter inning to get his 29th save of the season.
Before the sixth inning the Yankees starter, has given two lead generating runs to the Red Sox that ended his spell after just over four innings. Bartolo Colon was not happy with his performance in which he scattered six hits and one walk.
Joe Girardi called Colon out in the fifth and it proved the best call for the Yankees as their reliever made a perfect back up. Boone Logan completed the fifth inning and Cory Wade tossed less than a single inning to create some trouble for the Red Sox.
"That's a big situation," Logan said Friday night after striking out Gonzalez, who leads the Majors with a .356 batting average and 91 RBIs, to end the scoring threat. "You can't think of it like, 'It's Adrian Gonzalez.' That's where you can get into trouble."
The Red Sox had scored one run each in the bottom of the third and the fourth inning but their batting line-up failed to carry forward. Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz each added an RBI single.
