London-related question for fiction project -- where might someone go to escape from the city in a hurry?

I have a couple of characters who are involved with some unsavory people and events. They need to leave London in a hurry after some unpleasantness. They're around 20, involved with the music scene. They don't have much money but have stolen some cash. Where might they go for a couple of weeks until things die down (and why -- what would make a specific place good for their purposes)? It's the early 1970s, if that makes any difference to your answer.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Take the train to Brighton

  2. Newcastle was a favourite bolt-hole for Londoners in the 1970 - for example, the film "Get Carter" starring Michael Caine.

Hitch-hiking was still possible and acceptable in the 1970s (God, I did enough of it myself!). And the A1 and the M1 were good hitch-hiking territory.

Northern Line train to Hendon Central and start then hitching on the A41 at the Hendon Central Circus roundabout outside the station.

  3. Victoria coach Station and a coach anywhere including Ireland / France / Scotland all cheap.

For Historical value a company called Slatery's used to run the coach / ferry service to Ireland. In the 70#s there would have been no need for ID

  4. quickest way out I guess is the train ... how much money have they got? ... would it take them to Edinburgh or Glasgow? ... Scotland is a foreign land after all and "north of Watford" (in other words part of the unexplored waste land)
