Is it possible to hack someone through AIM?

This guy messaged me and I didn't know him but he said he knew me from a few years ago. He said his name was Adam Norman.

We chatted for a few min. and I just didn't want to talk to him because it/he was kind of weird.

He used references to Mortal Kombat (??)

I just want to make sure this wasn't some hacker who can now enter into my computer because of his convo. with me on AIM.

I have a Mac.

Am I screwed?

  1. Instant messaging can be a problem.

It is a headache for most companies as many of these programs allow users to transfer files without the normal security restrictions.

You will shortly see many companies banning access to these services as a result.

Don't open any links sent via IM, don't accept any files and don't share your desktop.

  2. It is possible for him to get your IP through aim without him sending you a file or anything.

You should be fine unless you start nothing anythings going weird on your computer.

If your internet starts to go really slowly he might be Dosing you and in that case you would unplug your router and replug it after an hour or so.

Dosing is when he sends tons of packets to your computer to slow down the internet or stop your internet.

I would just stop talking to him and block him.

  3. Not quite. He would need your public IP address and Mac address (physical address of hardware).Which can be done if the packets are traced but that would require skill and 3rd party software. So don't agree to download any unusual files from him.

  4. Check with this website to test the security of your computer

    https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

It will scan your network and tell you how safe you are, and also what to do if your not.

  5. if he knows your ip address, then he can hack you i think...
