Davenell Whatmore slated to become Pakistan’s next Head Coach - Cricket News Update
Former Australian right-handed batsman, Davenell Whatmore, is set to be named
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board officials, Whatmore and Julian Fountain will arrive in the first week of March to sign their respective contracts, where the former will work as the Head Coach, while Julian will take on the fielding duties.
The Sri Lankan born Australian cricketer has played 7 Test matches and a single ODI in his career; however, he featured prominently in first-class cricket, where he has played 108 games, scoring 6116 runs at 33.97.
He announced his international retirement in 1988-89 and decided to pursue a coaching career. His most notable achievement came in the 1996 World Cup, when he guided the Sri Lankan team to their first triumph in the mega event.
After that, he tried his hand in the English domestic circuit with, with whom he won the National League in 1998 and 1999, along with the NatWest Trophy (1998).
After a stint with Lancashire, Davenell then went on to coach Bangladesh from 2003 to 2007, where he developed a poor Bangladeshi outfit into a challenging team. In his tenure as coach, Bangladesh defeated the likes of
In 2009, he was appointed as the coach of the Indian Premier League outfit, the Kolkata Knight Riders, but his team failed to perform to its potential and finished bottom in his first season. It followed with another bad run in 2010, as KKR failed to qualify
for the knockout stage. However, in 2011the IPL outfit finally made it to the semi-finals before losing out to the Indians.
On Jan 01, 2012, Davenell relinquished his duties with the Kolkata Knight Riders, after holding extensive talks with PCB chairman, Zaka, and other officials of the board, while he finalised personal terms.
The 57-year-old is expected to take over from interim coach, stepped down from the post due to health related issues.
Apart from the recent ODI series defeat against, with the 3-0 whitewash of England, as the most notable.
 However, with the PCB deciding to hire a more qualified coach, Whatmore remains the prime candidate for the Head Coach position.
