Carlos Pena shines as Chicago Cubs rout Cincinnati Reds 6-3 - MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ first baseman, Carlos Pena had a tremendous day with the bat as he hit three RBIs including a solo homer and went 2-for-4 with an average of .227 in the Cubs’ 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field, Chicago on September 7.
Reds added their initial run in the first inning to get a 1-0 lead. Joey Votto posted the first run on score-board when Yonder Alonso hit a single-run drive towards centre-field and Jay Bruce occupied second base to end the first inning. The batters struggled
from the second to fourth inning and were unable to yield some valuable runs for their teams.
In the second inning, Reds’ third baseman Juan Francisco lined out to first base, Ramon Hernandez flied out and Johnny Cueto grounded out to third base without scoring even a single run. Similarly, at the bottom of third inning, DJ LeMahieu drove a single-run
shot towards right-field and Kyle Hill hit a grounder into double play, from short-stop to first base but Ryan Dempster struck-out without completing a run.
Cubs tied the game 1-1 at the bottom of the fifth inning when LeMahieu drove a single-run shot towards left-field and Pena scored a tie run. Cubs went ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning by blasting two quick runs. Starlin Castro and Reed Johnson both took back-to-back
singles when Aramis Ramirez bunted a double run shot to deep left-field.
Pena said, “I think sometimes in those situations we tend to get a little bit anxious and try to do too much. So my whole role there was stay under control and not try to save the world, you know.”
On the other hand, Reds’ batters also kept themselves alive and smashed two runs to again level the game 3-3. Votto hit a sacrifice fly to right-field, Cueto scored one run and Brandon Phillips moved to third base. The tie run was taken by Phillips when
Bruce doubled to left-field and Edgar Renteria occupied third base to end the seventh inning.
During eighth inning, Cubs smashed three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Pena struck a three-run homer (408 feet) towards right-field while Castro and Ramirez both added two collective runs to end the game with a convincing lead.
As a result, Cubs won the three-game series 2-1 after defeating the Reds in the series finale.
