Bubba Watson reveals his ingenious shot on the second playoff at Masters which landed him the title
Bubba Watson pulled in a jaw-dropping spinning shot on the second Playoff hole at the Augusta National to overtake the rampaging Louis Oosthuizen to win the title.
He now revealed the secret behind his magical shot and although he claims to be just an “average Joe” he admits that the shot was one of his special ones at Augusta National.
On a question about his ingenuity regarding the shot, Watson exclaimed, “Whew, I’m pretty good”.
The big-hitting left-handed Watson surged to stardom with his victory at the first major title of the season and his solid performance throughout the day testified his brilliant putting techniques.
With the drive landing in the thick bush adjacent to the fairways, Watson needed a par to stay alive in the nail-biting showdown with the South African Oosthuizen.
He spun his wrist to pull in a magical shot, one that even stunned the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson.
He added, “When it comes to the creativity, that’s just who I am. It thrills me because then I can pull off some shots. That’s exciting, I don’t care if the fans were there or not . . . It was off the pine straw, and I knew I could make it come out hot.
I just rolled my wrists over and hooked it about 40 yards . . . To get that close was very special. I was expecting front of the green, maybe centre of the green, you never expect it that close”.
What remains anomalous with Watson, is the fact that the 33-year-old has never undertaken any help from the wide range of professional swing coaches in the business.
He learned to play golf at an early age and took lessons from his mentor and only coach, his father Gerry Lester Watson, Sr.
Watson insists that he is just an average golfer who plays primarily to follow his passion for the sport.
He says that anyone who has the love and dedication for the sport can pull in similar shots in the course of his career.
Watson is currently on a whirlwind tour of the country, giving interviews and appearing in talk shows in number of TV Channels.
He will be playing at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a bid to defend his title.
