http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glenn-Maxwell-c60189, kept the innings moving forward, and got
the team up to 325 for 7 by stumps on day 1 (November 2) of their tour match, at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Australia A won the toss and elected to bat first. The pitch, seeming on first sight to be a tempting green-tinged affair which was bound to appeal to the Proteas pacemen, did not quite live up to appearances, and made the South African quicks work hard
for wickets. However, Steyn lived up to his reputation as one of the best pacers in the business, claiming a vital 3 for 43 and maintaining an economy rate of 2.38. He was aided in his efforts by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RK-Kleinveldt-c2334 (19-5-45-2).
The earlier part of Australia A’s innings was marked by the fall of three quick wickets – opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phillip-Hughes-c2185 (5) fell prey to Kleinveldt in the 13th over, and skipper Andrew
McDonald was trapped lbw by Tahir on duck in the very next over.
However, the team found respite in the innings of opener Quiney (85) and Steven http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 (67), both of whom joined forces for a massive 122-run stand for the fourth wicket. Their efforts got the team total up to 166 by the 47th over, after which
Steyn intervened to send Quiney packing. He was followed back to the pavilion shortly afterwards by Smith, who was dismissed lbw by Imran Tahir.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moises-Henriques-c2021 remained unremarkable with a mere 6-run contribution, after which he was sent packing by Kleinveldt. However, Alex Doolan anchored the innings with an as yet unbeaten 76. He was joined by Glenn Maxwell (64) for a 133-run partnership for
the 7th wicket, and by the time Maxwell departed off Steyn in the 87th over, the team had reached 318 for 7.
By stumps on day 1, with Doolan (76*) and wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TD-Paine-c2652 (1*) at the crease, Australia A found themselves at 325 for 7 – a position they will be hoping to build on as the match progresses.
