2010 NHL Regular Season Updates – New York Islanders surprisingly win 5-2 against Calgary Flames
Calgary Flames hosted the struggling New York Islanders as part of the 583rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match took place this Monday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in front of around 19,000 fans. This match was expected
to be won by the Calgary Flames as New York Islanders is second to bottom team. However, Islanders came up with a brilliant performance winning the match 5-2 with an exceptional performance by John Tavares as he scored two goals and made an assist.
New York Islanders never looked to be the away team with the absolutely brilliant start they made. Not only did they come up with regular goal attempts but their defence was rock solid. The away side worked hard and was determined to score.
New York Islanders did just that bagging a goal through John Tavares backhand shot in the 4th minute. New York Islanders continued to attack and their positive approach to the game saw them scoring once again in the 9th minute to double
their lead. The goal was scored by Matt Moulson.
Calgary Flames backed by the home fans started to come up with a few attacks and managed to open their account with a goal from David Moss in the 12th minute. The home team cut the lead to one goal but this joy didn’t last long as Islanders scored
once again in the 14th minute through John Tavares to regain the two goals lead to their advantage.
The period ended with New York Islanders leading 3-1 as they made 13 goal attempts while Calgary Flames made 9 goal attempts.
New York Islanders continued with the form into the second period and came across scoring chances right from the start. They successfully found the back of the net through Matt Moulson’s shot in the 4th minute.
After this, Calgary Flames totally dominated the match firing shots and maintaining a tight defence. This resulted in the Flames piling pressure which finally was rewarded as they scored in the 14th minute and left them trailing 2-4. The goal
was scored by David Moss from a well placed flick shot.
Though there were more scoring chances for Calgary Flames but they failed to capitalize as New York Islanders led 4-2 going into the break. During the course of the period, Calgary Flames made 19 goal attempts while the Islanders made 9 goal attempts.
The final period was again dominated by the Calgary Flames as they dominated every department from defence to offence but the goal keeper of New York Islanders didn’t allow any further goals. In fact, it was New York Islanders who scored the only goal of
the period through Michael Grabner in the 19th minute.
The period and the match ended with New York Islanders winning the match 5-2 from 26 goal attempts in the match while Calgary Flames made 43 goal attempts!
