flowering plant identification

My uncle has a plant in his garden that I have never seen before.  The leaves lie flat on the ground and the stem has little balls all the way up the stem that are buds with pink flowers starting to bloom at the top. Can anyone tell me what it is? He thinks it is called lace, I could not find it on the internet!!
