World Ice Hockey Championships: Teams USA, Canada start off campaign with a winner each-NHL News
Team USA and Canada are up against each other in the next game of their World Hockey Championships’ campaign on Saturday, May 05, 2012.
Both teams have won their starting games of the championships, respectively, with Team USA comprehensively and comfortably beating France and Team Canada overpowering Slovakia, formerly known as Czechoslovakia.
The 2012 World Ice hockey Championships started in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland on Friday, May 04.
Apart from the United States and Canada, Russia, Germany and other Scandinavian and European states are taking part in the event, which after the Olympics is the second largest show-off of the game.
It was a remarkable start for Team USA that won a rather one-sided game with the final score of 7-2.
Almost all players including captain, Jack Johnson, scored for the side. Kyle Okposo, who plays for the New York Islanders, scored twice to start off the campaign.
At one stage, the game was tied, 2-2. However, the American players dominated the later part of the game through to the end, scoring five more goals during the period.
France could not score a goal in the later part, and also struggled to gain puck possession.
Other players who scored for the USA are Bobby Ryan, Max Pacioretty, Jim Slater and Jeff Petry, while for France, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Nicolas Besch, scored a goal each.
Team Canada, meanwhile, overcame the Slovakia challenge narrowly with a one-goal margin, 3-2. Jordan Eberle, Andrew Ladd and Jamie Benn scored a goal each for Canada.
For Slovakia, Milan Bartovic and Tomas Tatar scored a goal each.
After making successful starts, both teams are now going to face each other this weekend.
Although both of them have leading stars from the National Hockey League (NHL) in their squads, Team Canada seems to be ahead of Team USA in odds.
However, if Americans are able to put up such a strong show as they did against France, the result could well be in their favour.
