The last time Dhoni played a explosive innings was against Sri Lanka in the 3rd ODI of 2005/2006 season, played  at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, on 31 October 2005 in which he scored 183 runs with the help of 15 fours and 10 sixers in 145 balls, which helped India to win the match.

Dhoni came in when India was in complete control of the match, Dhoni then went in and smashed England al over the place, eventually he went for one shot too many against Kevin Pietersen and he holed out on the boundary. Dhoni made 92 from about 80 balls. (Kumble later went on and hit a 100)

EDIT- He's played about 30 matches since the 2007 match at The Oval. If this question was made to prove a point, then i have to say that all players go through bad patches in there career. Kevin Pietersen of England has gone a LONG time without producing his best
