A single tire is supporting a weight of 325kg. With a ruler you find that the tire is 18 cm wide and the flattened segment of the tire in contact with the road is 10 cm long.

What is the pressure in this tire, in psi?

  1. Area of contact = 18*10

                           = 180 cm2

    Pressure = Force / Area

                  = 325 / 180

                  = 1.805 kg/cm2

                  = 1.805 * 2.2 * 2.54*2.54

                  = 25.62 psi ( approx)
