Unicorns A v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Alistair-Thornely-c75746 shines for Unicorns A
Unicorns A defeated the England Under-19s by four wickets and 12 balls remaining in a 50-over game, at the Haslegrave Ground, Loughborough in England, on Wednesday, July 13, 2011.
The hosts batted first and managed 243 runs for the loss of nine wickets at the end of their allotted 50 overs. Opening batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond was the star of the innings, collecting 50 runs for his side at the top of the order.
However, the Unicorns A didn’t have too many problems during their run chase, as they achieved the target with four wickets in hand and two overs remaining.
Michael Thornely was the top scorer of the visitors’ innings and the game, collecting 86 runs. He also bowled well in the match, picking up three wickets, which earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.
Toss was won by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Ball-c41883, who was the captain of the hosts. He elected to bat first, considering the nature of the pitch, which was terrific for batting. There was no moisture in the wicket and it was hard and dry.
The start to the England U-19s’ innings was a terrific one, as openers Bell-Drummond and Sam Kelsall put together 64 runs for the first wicket partnership. The latter was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and was dismissed after collecting
26 runs off 37 balls with the help of a couple of boundaries.
Bell-Drummond was the next man to be dismissed after scoring 50 runs off 51 balls, smashing eight fours.
Two quick wickets fell after that, as Sam http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wood-c98110 and Rammy Singh failed to make an impression. They got out after adding just eight and one to the total respectively, leaving the team struggling at 92/4.
Wicketkeeper batsman Ben Foakes and Ball played well, rescuing their side from trouble. They collected 58 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before the latter got dismissed for 36.
The fall of the home team’s captain saw a collapse for the team and Foakes also got out after scoring 25 runs. However, Brett Hutton batted superbly and remained unbeaten until the end on 49 runs off 56 balls, smashing six boundaries.
Thornely finished with figures of 3/34 in 10 overs for the Unicorn A team, restricting the opposition below 250 in the end.
It was yet again Thornely in action once the visitors came out to bat, as he gave a spectacular start to his team. He collected 86 runs from 97 balls with the help of 14 boundaries in his impressive knock before finally being dismissed.
There were also some solid contributions from Craig and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Keith-Alan-Parsons-c70573 remained unbeaten on 24 off 26 deliveries, guiding his team to an easy win in the end.
Tom http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Knight-c71599 took two wickets for the England U-19s, but failed to restrict the opposition from achieving the target.
