The Troy University volleyball team came from behind and extended its winning streak of five matches by defeating Georgia State on Tuesday, September 6. It was a tough match which spanned over five sets and experienced many ups and downs. Georgia State Team
gave a hard time to the Trojans and the situation remained tense until the ending moments of the match when Atlanta, Georgia saw the Trojans emerge as winners. They claimed a victory by sending 3-2 (17-25, 23-25, 31-29, 25-21, and 15-12) on to the board. The
Trojans played without their primary setter, Alexandra Alexander, but still managed to win the tiring five-set match.
It was fifth straight win for the Trojans, which is the longest winning streak for Troy University Team since 2002.
The early phase of the game portrayed a different picture as Trojans became the victim of a heavy strike of volleys from the opposite side. Chelsea Perry of Georgia State was quite hard on hitting the ball. She served with precision and set the pace for
her team. Muki Kangwa attacked aggressively and put more pressure on the Trojans. As a result, the Trojans got upset and suffered the loss of the opening set.
The second set was also successful for Georgia State. They maintained a perfect flow and remained consistent in hitting the ball in the right spots. Natasha Kolunija of the Trojans attempted good blocks and saved some crucial points but on the whole Georgia
State led the scores. Trojans’ performance saw considerable improvement in the second set and there were actually moments in the game when they got really close to their opponents’ score. Trojans dropped the second set with a narrow gap of two points at 23-25.
After dropping two sets in row, Trojans were on the tips of their toes. They formed better combinations and came up with a strong offensive attack. Breanna Cullity, Kayla Pickart and Natasha Kolunija, all combined their skills and stole the show. Trojans
battled out the third set win by posting 32-29 on board. Success in the third set helped the Trojans to come out of the shock of early defeat and they tied the score in the fourth set. Georgia State tried to break the rhythm of Trojan attackers but failed
to do so. Trojans kept the momentum and seized victory by winning final set.
The Head Coach of Trojans, Sonny Kirkpatrick, praised the good work of his players. He commented: “It was great match to be a part of and I couldn’t be more proud of our team. We had some Individuals step, but we stayed within the team concept and they didn’t
want to let each other down.”
More action is in store for Trojan fans at the weekend as the team will put up against Kennesaw State. They will play three matches in Kennesaw, Georgia, before returning home. Furthermore, the Trojans will see Alabama A&M Bulldogs at home on September 13.
