The review of China’s progress at Women’s Volleyball Championship in Guangzhou, China
On the day-6 of Volleyball Championship at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, women’s competitions started out with first round matches. Officially, the volleyball championship was kicked off with men’s competitions on November 13th,
2010, while women’s event was opened on Thursday, 18th November, 2010. A total of 11 women’s teams hit the podium and they were divided into two groups. Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Chinese Taipei, Maldives and Japan played their matches under the
tag of Group A, while Group B was comprised of hosts China, Thailand, South Korea and Mongolia. The first preliminary round of Women’s Championship at Asian Games covered its length from 18-22 November, 2010.
At the end of first round, Kazakhstan appeared as the top team in Group A with an overall score of 5-0. Kazakhstan staged a stellar performance and climbed up to the top-position in Group A. Quite similarly, China is also making shocking waves in Group B.
The defending championship has dominated other teams in Group B so far. China has defeated Tajikistan, South Korea and Mongolia in the first three fights. The home team has showed the intent to secure the title for another year.
China vs. Tajikistan
China overpowered Tajikistan in the opening match of Women’s Championship on 18th November. The defending champions China easily managed to dismiss Tajikistan and posted a 3-0 victory in 42 minutes. Tajikistan’s team was no match for strong Chinese
side. In addition, it was pretty hard for an inexperienced team to play in front of large crowd. Other than that, China had the competitive edge of playing at the home soil. Tajik player failed to put up with the power of China’s strikers and accepted defeat
and they took full advantage of their height and physique. China bagged early victory against Tajikistan and got their guns ready for arch rivals, Korean and Thailand in next encounters.
China vs. Korea
China came across Korea in the next match on 20th November, 2010. The home-team posted a hard earned 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, and 15-6) victory over Korea. The Korean team opened the match with great pace and created a lot of trouble for
China. The exchange of strong serves and commanding spikes by Korean players caused enough damage to China’s defence. The point-to-point battle continued and finally Korean ladies were able to snatch the first set from China at 25-23.
After dropping the first set China tried to come out of blues and attacked with top strikers but Korea remained ahead in the game and captured the second set by posting another 25-23. The head coach of China, Yu Juemin instructed the team before the start
of third set and pointed out the weak areas. China’s team returned in the game and earned better status in third set. Moreover, they followed the same approach and didn’t allow Korea to break their rhythm. China won last three sets of the game in row and declared
match victory.
China vs. Mongolia
China outplayed the Mongolian team in third match on Sunday, November 21st in front of 1,208 spectators. The home-team thrashed 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, and 25-8) victory over Mongolia and also extended their winning streak to 3-0. Mongolian team failed
to stand the hard-hitting of Jie Yang and lost the first set with big margin. Mongolian squad struggled to create a buzz in second set but China didn’t allow them raise their heads. China claimed second set with better score. The game entered third set and
China attacked from different angles. Mongolia progressed at snail’s pace and hardly touched the mark ‘9’ on the scoreboard. On the other hand, China quickly covered the length of the set and achieved the set point.
China is fully prepared to take on Thailand in the next match, which will end the first preliminary round of Women’s Volleyball Championship in Group B.
