Sony asserts PlayStation 4 primarily as a video game console – Gaming news
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has made it clear that the company’s next-generation console PlayStation 4 is a video game console before anything else.
The Verge has reported that while speaking at the D11 conference earlier this week in the US, the Sony executive stressed on the main purpose of the new console to appeal to the gamers by running great and powerful games.
“The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers. If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with
all our consoles, including the PS3,” Hirai asserted.
The statement by the Sony CEO leaves no doubt that there has not been any shift in the company’s focus in respect to its video game consoles and catering to the entertainment needs of the gaming community.
Hirai did, however, go on to concede that the PlayStation 4 does have non-video games related functions, though the curtains would be raised off these functions in the coming months.
It is difficult to say what sort of non-game content is the Sony boss exactly talking about, but one thing is for certain, it would be definitely something mouth-watering.
Throughout 2012, the industry games analyst kept raising concerns about the extended life-cycle of current-generation consoles, namely the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. According to them, the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets was a
sign that people were no longer interested in old video game consoles and craved for a fresh experience.
The industry analysts stressed on the need of bringing new, high-end video game consoles into the market to keep the gamers from moving to alternative gaming platforms.
Sony eventually unveiled its next-generation console during a press conference on February 20, 2013. The console is expected to hit the shelves in the final quarter of 2013. The console will be competing against Nintendo’s Wii U, which launched across the
globe in the fourth quarter of 2012, and Xbox One, which was unveiled a couple of weeks back and is expected to launch at the end of this year.
