Rugby Football League announces three-man list for Man of Steel award
Rugby Football League (RFL) named a three-man list for the Man of Steel award, on Monday, September 26, 2011.
This list includes Rangi Chase of Castleford Tigers, Sam Tomkins of Wigan Warriors and James Roby of St. Helens.
The Man of Steel title winner is decided by an opinion poll of every Super League player. Three votes are cast by all players to decide the winner amongst them. The votes vary in weightage by points carried by either of them, which are 5 points, 3 points
and 1 point.
Chase of Castleford is appraised a lot for his performance this year. His role in taking the Tigers to the semi-final berth of Challenge Cup has been significant and cannot be sidelined. His contributions to the rugby league palette have been noteworthy
since the beginning of this year.
Currently, he also bagged man of the match title for his performance for the Exiles against England, in June. He played a major role in gliding the Exiles to victory.
Tomkins has also gained recognition for his brilliant performance throughout this year and his role in advancing Wigans to the Challenge Cup success is noteworthy. He has been the titleholder of the Young Player of the Year award twice for two successive
years in 2008 and 2009.
Tomkins was short listed for the same category a year ago, along with Pat Richards and Adrian Morley of Warrington Wolves. Tomkins has been recognised as the top try scorer with 27 tries to his credits this year.
Wigans celebrated their massive 44-0 win over the Castleford Tigers on Sunday, September 25, which brings them back into the game for this year’s tug for the Super League title. Previously, against St. Helens the franchise had lost 18-26, which had left
them with another chance to spring themselves back into action, for the Super League Grand final, which was successfully utilised by the defending champions.
The competition is very tight amongst all the three contenders for the prestigious award. Roby of St. Helens has been exceptional in his feats around the year. Roby is believed to have annulled the gap created by Keiron Cunningham, whose performance is considered
legendary in the world of rugby.
Roby’s profile has been recently studded with distinguished awards like the Rugby League Writers Association’s Player of the Year award. He has also topped the scoring charts with 26 tries this year.
The award will be presented to the winner at the dinner during the Grand Final week, on Monday, October 3 in Manchester along with the awards for Coach of the Year and Young Player of the Year.
