Poor performance of Women’s Singles creates trouble for coach Chi Zhanrong – Badminton news
After the poor performance of Malaysia’s Women’s Singles national players at the last week’s Uber Cup Preliminary Round, Chi Zhanrong’s position as a coach is under potential threat as he has failed to produce top class shuttlers.
In the Preliminary Round in Macau, only Yang Li Lian and Tee Jing Yi could manage to win one match each but no other shuttler in Women’s Singles squad earned even a single point for Malaysia, which exposed the vulnerability of Malaysian females in Singles category.
Because of the bad performance of female shuttlers, Malaysia failed to qualify for the Uber Cup Finals, which will kick off in May, at Wuhan, China.
Malaysia ended at number eight position in the Preliminary Round of Uber Cup Finals and failed to make the cut.
Besides Li Lian and Jing Yi, the other shuttlers in Women’s Singles national squad were Lydia Cheah and Sannatasah Saniru.
Both ladies failed to put up good show in the qualifying matches and could not even win a single fight against any opponent in the tournament.
It seems that there is an urgent need of a competent coach who could boost the confidence of female shuttlers and take them to the next level of badminton.
While talking about the vulnerability of female shuttlers in the national squad, Kenny Goh, the general manager of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said that they have not much depth in the squad and are looking forward to fix the issues.
He said, “I admit that we lack depth in the women’s singles. The HPT will have to look at the reports from the coaches and team manager and decide what needs to be done.”
There are some possibilities BAM will look into as they can elevate the position of Woon Sze Mei or they can also hand over the shuttlers to Wong Mew Choo, who was the best shuttler in Malaysia in Women’s Singles category for the last one decade.
Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann and China’s Bao Chunlai are two more options that can also be utilised in the coaching staff of Malaysia in order to produce better female shuttlers in the Women’s Singles category.
