Mia St John takes on Christy Martin for vacant WBC female light middleweight title – Boxing News
Mia St John, the former WBC International female lightweight champion, will make a comeback after two years against arch nemesis Christy Martin, the former WBC female light middleweight champion, in a 10-round bout which will be held on August 14, 2012.
The clash will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Roy Englebrecht of Roy Englebrecht Events. The bout will also have the vacant WBC female light middleweight title up for grabs.
This will be the second time that the two legendary women will take on each other and put forth the boxing fans an epic sequel to the prequel that mesmerised the crowd on December 2, 2002. The bout was won by Christy Martin via unanimous decision.
It is this reason why during a recent press conference, Mia remarked that she will end the feud once and for all and will prove the world and especially Christy that she has the ability to not only nail her but also stop her via knockout.
Mia, also known as ‘The Knockout’, stated, “I’ve waited nearly 10 years for this rematch. I know I out-boxed Christy in the last fight, but this time I am going to BEAT her. Now we’ll see who the real WBC Champion is, La Gallina or La Guerrera.”
The 45-year-old Mia is widely known for being a true sport ambassador and the August venture will be her first bout in almost two years. Mia last fought against Tammy Franks on October 16, 2010, emerging victorious via unanimous decision.
St. John, who will enter her 60th career bout, while explaining her prior experience with Christy stated, “I know I could have won if I had gotten my confidence up a couple rounds earlier, which I didn't. But now I have that confidence because I've fought
her before. Now I know that I can not only beat her, but I believe I can actually stop her.”
With 46 wins and 18 coming by way of knockout, Mia is still a tough opponent who cannot be taken lightly at all. Martin, 44, has been in a total of 58 bouts and is looking forward to grab career’s 50th win.
Martin is also coming after a substantial gap and above all has recently faced severe domestic issues. The bout will definitely be a worth-watching one as both ladies have been considered as the best of their time.
The show will be televised live from Table Mountain Casino in Friant, California, United States.
