  1. Pilates is far better for weight loss and other such training. They have the integrity to take some small part of the practices from Yoga, but not call it Yoga. Truth is that Yoga is not a weight loss program at all. It is not a physical fitness program. To call Yoga a fitness program or a weight program is like holding a nail in your hand and calling it a house. It might be a part of a house, but it is not a house.

While it is not true that Yoga is a merely physical program, it appears that way to the majority of people. Therefore, because of the appearances, many sincere seekers are not finding authentic Yoga, which has some of the highest teachings and practices known to humanity.

Following authentic Yoga may bring a person not only spiritual realization, but also side effects that might include physical health, reducing or eliminating some diseases, or health promotion. The intent of Yoga is to focus on the spiritual, right from the very beginning. Through such an authentic orientation of Yoga, many fruits will come, including the physical benefits.

The problem is not one of changing the path of those who practice adaptations of Yoga, or only small parts of Yoga. Such people have a perfect right to do as they wish. However, what is needed, is to clearly reaffirm the true nature of authentic Yoga and make this available to the true seekers in a wide array of venues. Fortunately, at least a small percentage of teachers are trying to do this.

To the ancients, Yoga is a complete system, of which the postures are a small, though quite useful part. The word "Yoga" referred to the whole, not merely one part, which is the postures, or Asanas. The entire purpose of Yoga is spiritual in nature, according to the ancient sages.

In modern times, the relative position of the postures has been elevated, so as to lead people to believe that the word "Yoga" refers to physical postures or Asanas, and that the goal of these is physical fitness. The whole and the part have been reversed, terribly misleading and confusing people about the true nature of authentic Yoga.

  2. maybe not for weight loss but it is good for you.

  3. yoga and pilates dont do ****!!

trust me all it is, is stretching.

my mum tried pilates for 1 year and she only lost 7 lbs in one year,

then she started walking alot, and lost 4 stone in 6 months,

    walking is the best excercise.

do 1-2 hours of fast walking a day and you will lose weight fast

  4. Don't listen to the stupid girl who said 'do pilates my bfriend lost 30lbs in 2 weeks' as that means she would of lost a stone a week which is a bit exteme to me.

I do yoga and they are very good for toning the muscles you never knwe you had, i like doing it and yes it will help towards weight loss but on top of that eat healthy, and try cardio exercises as these are the fat burners,

    good luck x*x

  5. Both of them work as long as you watch your food intake.

  6. Losing weight is not just about exercise - although that can play an important role.  To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in through your food and drink.

If you do want to do an exercise, choose one that you enjoy and can commit yourself to.  Diets don't work, so you need to be prepared to be in this for the long run.

In terms of yoga or pilates it will be different for each person.  Which one makes you feel as if you have worked harder?  Don't just restrict yourself to those two exercises - there is an unlimited number of things to try.  Personally I do martial arts - I'm not a fighter and never will be but you get a brilliant overall workout just doing the normal exercises and you get to meet people as well who will be able to spur you on.

  7. Yoga is better for your weight loss issue. It targets special areas of your body, as well as the entire of it! You'll get in shape, and tone up your body. So, go with Yoga... By the way, I have a free yoga e-course for you, check it: http://www.yoga-health-beauty-energy.com...

    All the best,

    Chaker

  8. Neither yoga nor pilates are great for weight loss. Why? Because they don't burn large amounts of calories and a calorie deficit is what is needed for weight loss. We normally find that a calorie deficit is achieved best through eating less and adding cardio exercise such as running, elliptical trainer, rowing machine, stationary or outside biking, etc.

Now, that being said, both yoga and pilates are excellent exercises for flexibility, toning muscles and working on core strength. I would do either or both but don't expect just adding yoga or pilates to your day, to make you suddenly lose a bunch of weight.

I suspect that the person whose friend lost 30 lbs is on a serious crash diet ... pilates did not do that.

  9. You might want to check out this blog. They just started it but there is a store and they update the content regularly. Maybe you are able to find some programs through the store to help you with your weight loss problem. Good luck!

  10. I wouldn't restrict yourself to yoga or pilates.

There are many ways to lose weight and tone up.Swimming is an excellent activity that uses all muscles.

Running is another exercise that doesn't cost , walking, etc.

Stick to a healthy eating plan and this combined with exercise should bring the results your after.

  11. Pilates! :D.

i do it all the time, my bestfriend has lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks(:
