Question:

Dog in Heat - Diaper Advice needed?

Hello,

I have an 8 lb. chihuahua who is in heat. She cannot be fixed due to health issues so I will need to deal with this for the duration of her life (hopefully 20 plus years). I tried baby diapers w/ a tail hole but she just pulls them off and rips them up. Do dog diapers work? Are they unable to pull them off? If not dog diapers, any other tips?

Thank you for the help!

  1. dont use diapers they look funny on dogs, is this her first heat cycle? they usually learn to clean themselves, and u wont even realize when shes in heat but for her to learn to clean her self she will be messy in the beginning but shes gonna learn

  2. You may ask your vet is using chemical birth control (Mibolerone) is an option.

  3. There are some little dog panties with pockets for the pads in them that you can buy and yes they work.  you may have to cover the bow knot up somehow in order to keep her from taking them off unless you are able to stay home and keep an eye on her.  Go to petsmart or petco (which will be more expensive that petsmart) and ask about the protection for dogs in heat, they will be glad to help you find what you need for her.  Just be sure to take her with you to make sure that they fit.

  4. I would advise you to call your local pet store or vet. But i think the dog diapers work fine.

  5. hey i just asked the same question but my dog weighs 80 lbs.  i'll share any help i get if you will do the same thanx

    Hope this helps

  7. We had the same problem with our sheltie. We bought a doggie diaper/harness that had removable pads in it. They can't get them off because you can adjust it a bit better than a regular diaper. You just have to take it off when they go outside and then slip it back on when they come in, it's pretty slick.

    Hope that helped!

  8. I've never tried dog diapers on my dogs, but I have seen them in our local pet supply store and have heard that they work. If she rips up the baby diapers, I'm assuming those are disposable ones, how about trying cloth diapers with those diaper covers that either button or velcro closed over the diaper which might make it harder for her to get them off and the cloth shouldn't be as easy for her to tear up.

I have seen the cloth baby diapers and diaper covers at our local Babies R Us.

  9. This is a cute website that shows you how to convert kids diapers which are cheaper than dog diapers. Looks like they with fit your chiuaua. http://doggiediapers.blogspot.com/

  10. Buy human baby diapers and cut a hole where her/his tail is.

    It is much cheaper!

(Cloth Kind) and Baby pins so he/she can not get them off!

  11. Yes, doggie diapers work. You can get them at most pet stores -- you can buy a little pant-like thing inside of which goes a maxi-pad, absorbent pad that come in boxes, and it works great. I let one of my dogs have one estrous cycle before having her spayed, and it worked for her. The "diaper" garments are usually attached with velcro. Good luck!

  12. I know you can get a "diaper" type thing, but it's much more durable... let me try to find a link thing...
