Can i use SATA power cable of SATA hard disk for connecting SATA optical drive

i have a SATA hard disk and i connected it with a sata power cable and recently i bought a sata optical drive and i have no power cable for connecting the drive, so i decided to connect it with the power cable of hard disk(I have two sata hard disk)

  1. Yes, SATA is SATA.  Any SATA connector (power or data) can be used to connect any SATA device (hard disk or optical).

    Well, as long as it isn't the power cable that is already going to your hard drive but I think that goes without saying.  Obviously each drive will need it's own power cable.

    [edit] If you don't have enough power cables to hook up all the drives in your computer you can buy a Y splitter that will turn one power cable into two.  Don't use too many of these though because you don't want to overload your power supply but one or two shouldn't hurt anything.

    They come in two flavors.  Ones that will split one molex power connector into two SATA connectors and ones that split a SATA power connector into three SATA connectors.

    You might want to get these at a local computer shop though or you'll pay more for shipping than you will for the wire itself.

    I would suggest the 1 SATA to 3 SATA seeings as we already know you have SATA power connectors.
