2. You need to pick a few passages where there is clear evidence of literary elements.

It seems to me that you don't know enough about these elements (listed at the bottom of the assignement). Fortunately, they are all defined for you. Unfortunately, you weren't given any examples!Honestly, I'm appalled that you'd be given an assignment like this over the summer if your English II teacher didn't significantly expose you to them.

The good news is, these things are easy to recognize if you understand what they mean. The first link has a more detailed description of these elements that should be easy to understand. The second link provides awesome examples of literary elements so you can point out other examples in the novel. This is a higher level glossary and you may not need to know all of these terms yet, but it has examples of the ones you need to know (the ones on your assignment).

You will be required to take a comprehension test at the beginning of the course, so make sure you read the book and understand the plot and characters. If it's boring, you need to make sure not to be half asleep when your reading it, really pay attention!

You do not need to write a paper, but you must be able to have three passages that point out different literary elements and explain what the elements are.

    I found this passage online:

'My uncle Daniel's just like your uncle..."

This passage tells us what person the novel is written in, first person, which means that the author is a character of the story who can explain only the actions of what goes on around him/her and his own thoughts and opinions, but cannot tell us about the thoughts of other characters.

That's pretty much what you need to be able to do. You should spend a good bit of time not only paying attention to the book but also learning these. You will, undoubtedly, be using them in English III and your teacher will go over them, but you need to be able to make a good presentation. It's unfortunate, but you really do need to learn these at least fairly well before you go back to school.

I suggest you copy the passage make a bulleted list of the literary elements seen in the passage and what they mean and how they show it, like I did above. Don't go flying by the seat of your pants on this one, take time to sho your teacher you mean business.

Congratulations on being in Honors English. I'm very strong in English but I wouldn't have known squat if it weren't for Honors coursework. Good luck!
