Yang Yong-Eun crushes Graeme McDowell to advance to the quarterfinals at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship
The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship has seen many a great players’ fall, but one Yang Yong-Eun gave the Asian fans of the game plenty to celebrate about with a 3rd round win. The South Korean flushed out The Irish golfing sensation Graeme
McDowell, a man who is being hailed in the international circuit as the best player in the game, in Friday’s round.
Yang finished the event with a grand straight 4 birdies bested McDowell 3 and 2 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. While McDowell had not been performing up to his full potential and had been frustrated with his form in the initial days of the event, these results
were still beyond everyone’s wildest dreams.
What did Yang have to say about his win? “It feels great to win over Graeme.”  We bet it did and we even forgive him for stating the obvious, after all the 44thseed winning over the 5th can have that effect on you.
The Asian player has now joined K.J. Choi in history books, to become the only two Koreans to have advanced to the quarter-finals at the event in the last 13 years. The event follows a knockout format from the first round, where players go head to head and
play to eliminate each other.
While we are sure McDowell must be very unhappy with his recent weak performance, he still acted like a good sport and congratulated Yang on his superb performance. "He was a tough man to beat today and, to be brutally honest, I was frustrated with my game
all week,” said the golfer.
He revealed after the match that surprising enough he had been feeling his best on the course that same day, yet still the eventual results of the match did not go his favour. But he admitted that that was the way of things in the world. He said that some
days no matter how good you seem to be playing, you run into an opponent who isn’t just playing good but great and that’s exactly what happened on Friday.
The player also added a sly comment about how, if he had been in his usual form, he could have beaten the Asian. Perhaps Mr. McDowell feels that Yang just ran into a spot of a good luck this time around.
While McDowell will not be winning the event, he will have a lot to celebrate about once the official world rankings are updated. The golfer started the tournament as the fourth best player in the world. But with Tiger pulling out another abysmal performance
and being sent home early, McDowell will surely be overtaking Woods on the world best charts.
