Wimbledon Grand National 2011: An astonishing victory by Victoria Falls
It was quite astonishing for the thousands of spectators and the bookmakers alike when the R. Rees trained fawn down, Victoria Falls, triggered a huge upset by winning the high-profile open race of the Primus Saver Grand National 2011 Final at Wimbledon
racecourse on August 30. Most of the race viewers were stunned with their fingers under the teeth.
Winning the £7500 contest over the 480-meter hurdled track was not an easy task for a non-favourite hound, but Victoria Falls did it marvellously. That was perhaps the best performance of his career.
Ahead of the race, the punters vehemently underrated the son of Hades Rocket out of Your View and staked all the money on Farloe Skywalker and Blackhall Prince, regarding them as the joint-favourite runners.
The contest began at 21:45 (GMT). Victoria Falls broke from the blue box. From the very beginning, he was running aggressively. However, he had to wait for the second hurdle to take lead.
Once he placed himself at the driving seat, the talented hound managed to increase his pace more. But Clonkeen Theo kept perturbing him time to time.
In face of all the challenges, Victoria Falls sustained his stamina till crossing the finish line by the minute margin. That unexpected victory proved to be greatly depressing for the bookmakers and stunning for the spectators.
Among the other hounds, Clonkeen Theo finished as the runner-up while Swift Defender grabbed third position on the podium. The fourth position went to Farloe Skywalker while Forest Rico and Blackhall Prince finished 5th and 6th respectively.
As a whole, it was an amazing and exciting event.
Since its inception in 1927, the Grand National event is held every year. The event originally started from White City and then moved to Hall Green in 1985. The Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium hosted the ace event for the first time in 1999. It was jointly won
by Pottos Storm/Hello Buttons.
The Grand National 2012 is just around the corner. The sport fans are eagerly waiting for the charming event that is always packed with thrill and amusement. Let us see who turns to become the champion of this year.
