Will Red Bull rivalry continue next season?
Red Bull driver, Mark Webber reckons that despite being a team sport, at the end of the day each driver only fights for himself in Formula one.
The Australian driver fought a very tough 2010 battle for the title, but lost to his teammate, Sebastian Vettel only at the last round of the season, the Abu Dhabi GP. The entire year has been filled with a lot of mishaps and
lack of fortune for the driver. Besides having fought a year-long battle with four very tough and competitive drivers, he also faced a sour relation with his teammate, and at several occasions he also accused his team for favouring Vettel over him.
The rivalry of the Red Bull duo got highlighted at the Turkish Grand Prix when the two crashed into each other while they were heading for a certain 1-2 finish for the team. Following the crash, Webber had to settle for 3rd place while Vettel
retired from the race.
Although the team declared that all has been settled between the two, the Silverstone Circuit once again demonstrated rift in the team. This time, the team management handed over the new front wing of Webber’s car to Vettel. The act was taken very offensively
by Webber who called himself to be the No.2 driver of the team.
However, as the Formula One caravan is ready to begin next season, and although both the drivers have announced that the air is clear between them, it is largely believed that the same animosity will be witnessed once again this year.
When Webber was asked about how he sees his relation with the team and his teammate next season, the 34-year-old stated, "There is a healthy respect; there has to be in competing against your rivals, otherwise you wouldn't get out there and have a go. You
have to respect your opposition. If you don't, you won't achieve great things because you'll drop your guard... there has to be an element of respect that way.”
He further added that it is difficult to have strong friendships with your rivals. Webber reckons that having closer friends from outside of your profession is easier and better.
While talking about his long career in Formula One and his future goals, Webber stated, "I think application, desire and determination to learn more are all important. Experience is a good thing, but you can't go out and buy that off the street. Also, you
never know who is watching, so keep pushing and keep trying.”
