Wildcats extend their centre Frankie Mariano contract for two more years – Rugby update
Belle Vue based professional rugby league club, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, has announced the extension in contract of their pivotal back row forward Frankie Mariano. The player has signed a two-year contract on May 20, to further his career in the Super
League Championship.
The Wildcats announced the decision last Friday, before the Challenge Cup’s knockout game against their sporting rivals, Castleford Tigers. The 23-year-old Mariano signed the Wildcats during the off-season on a one-year contract. During the season, he has
made 12 appearances for the Wildcats and has scored five tries so far.
Frankie Mariano has expressed his happiness in the extension of his contract with the Wildcats. He said, “I’m thoroughly enjoying my time at the club and playing some of the best rugby of my career at the moment. The club gave me a chance to prove what I
can do and I wanted to repay that by staying loyal and signing the contract extension.”
Wildcats Head Coach, John Kear, has welcomed the player’s decision of staying with the club. He added that he has made most of the opportunities club has provided to him in the season. Kear has termed Mariano as hardworking player and a talent that has a
desire to learn more to improve his game. He further added said, “We look forward to working further with Frankie to fulfill his obvious potential and develop him into an outstanding British back row forward.”
Mariano is 1.89 m tall and weighs 106 kg and made his senior debut for Hull KR in a drawn match against Sheffield Eagles in the Fifth Round of the 2009 Carnegie Challenge Cup. He earned his place in the senior side as he progressed through the Hull KR’s
development system.
Mariano played only three games for the Hull KR during the 2009/10 in the super league competition and later signed with the Wildcats.
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Chief Executive, James Elston, has expressed his satisfaction over Mariano’s decision to remain at the club. Elston also termed Mariano as an integral component of the club’s success and future. He said, “We are building our future
around young British players, who are committed to achieving success with the club and Frankie epitomises this.”
In other news, Wildcats’ are expecting the confirmation in extension of contract by their halfback Matty Wildie in the next few days. If the club keeps its better players in tact, it can expect to have a strong season next year.
