  1. the name xavier university has lots of history to it.

  2. When it was founded in 1933, it was named Ateneo de Cagayan.  Then in 1958, Ateneo de Cagayan became a university and was renamed to its present name, Xavier University, in honor of the Jesuit Missionary, Saint Francis Xavier. Fr. Francisco Araneta, S.J., then Rector explained that the rename was made in anticipation of sister-school Ateneo de Manila changing it's name to "Loyola University" (in honor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus) in 1959, a move which did not push through.

So far, there have been two attempts by the alumni of the then Ateneo de Cagayan to revert the name of the University to Ateneo de Cagayan. The first attempt was in the mid 90's and the second attempt was last year. These attempts were, however, not widely supported and in the case of the 2007 proposal, not endorsed by the Alumni Association of the University.

I suppose it would be Xavier University for a long, long time.

  3. It is the university's discretion.

  4. when i passed by xavier university,  they had  both names xavier universtiy and ateneo de cagayan on its logo.  all jesuit schools around the country are slowly encouraged to change name to make themselves more identifiable as a jesuit institution.

in fact, i just received a survey form from sacred heart school-jesuit on how the new school logo should appear.  with sacred heart school on top and ateneo de cebu at the bottom? or vice versa?

ultimately it would be the jesuit community thru its board of directors of the particular school that could legally change its name.

santa maria catholic school is now known as ateneo de iloilo

  5. Maybe because Xavier University is a prestigious name itself. Attaching Ateneo de cagayan after the Xavier is not bad at all but they might want to preserve the name for historical reasons..
