Who knows, it's the culture.

I read about a tribe in Africa where they have s*x all the time to mellow out. If they aruge over a banana, they'll have s*x. If they argue about who wants to hunt for boar today, they have s*x.

I want to go there.

It´s a big deal in any society but it´s so important  in the West because of the marketing value.

Possibly because we don't have much in the way of religion?

It's actually the outcome of my generation's (hippies)  focus on "free love", which was made practical by the contraceptive Pill. Our parents were quite sexually inhibited. My generation wanted more s*x, more open s*x, and more liberality about sexual matters, but look where it's got us. A s*x obsessed society. In our defence, we hippies didn't really know what we were doing, we just wanted peace love and understanding, man.

The pendulum will swing back but it will take some time to do so. Already the black clouds of religion are gathering on the horizon.

In general, Western society is driven by three main desires: food, s*x, and power.  These things are actually close in scope and can be tied in to one giant phenomenon, namely the overwhelming desire for personal security.  

Food provides security for the body, power provides security for the ego, and s*x provides security against death.  In precisely these three ways Western people are deluded and escape the truth.

Of course, s*x itself cannot stave off death.  But since a person recognizes that they have no chance of outrunning death, nevertheless they instinctively realize that a form of immortality can be found through the passing of DNA down through the generations.

It is this fear of dying and subsequent (some would say immature) resolution that drives us to become obsessed with s*x to a degree of excess.

This behavior is particularly noticed in Western society because historically we have inspired very little teachings on the nature of detachment and equanimity, preferring instead a philosophy and ideal that is more closely associated with capitalism on one hand and hedonism on the other.

But all the same, people the world over engage in this behavior, according to where they are in their lives, and their level of insight into themselves.  People in the East are no more insulated.

By the way, I would never say anything is inherently wrong with s*x; the question instead addresses why it is such a big deal.

It isn't.  In developing nations when plumbing and water lines to the houses is first installed, the residents feel "s**y" and mix up feeling "clean" after taking a bath with a desire for s*x.

In Ireland the promoters of anti-development still preach that they think that running water to the thatched huts and houses in Ireland will bring low morality.

Could be the other way around, with an obsession for hygiene causing people to surpress their desire for s*x, if any.  In a global society, there may be visitors from countries where leprosy and plague have not yet been eradicated.  A truly global outlook would turn a person off towards extramarital s*x that might bring the diseases of the "leper quarter" of City T......TO YOUR FACE!!!
