  1. Sign the card.  DO NOT write "ask for ID".  Another urban legend that really needs to be stopped.

This does not make it safer.  In fact it makes it easier for someone to use your credit card.  Thieves know where to buy fake ID for about $5.  Then the signature on the ID will match the one on the sales slip.  Now they can run up your account and even open new accounts.

If this happens to you, your credit card company might not eat the fraudulent charges because you VIOLATED the terms of your credit card agreement.

For those who insist on writing "ask for ID", go ahead but still sign the card.

  2. A signature is required so the vendors know that you are giving them a legitimate credit card. Some credit card holders opt not to sign the card; instead they will write "ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION." Then the vendor will ask for a driver's license. This can protect you if someone steals your card. Personally I have one credit card and it is signed.

  3. It is supposed to secure the card so that a merchant will be able to match the signature to the receipt you sign, but it is the best way to give a thief a sample of your signature to practice with.

Better to write "ask for ID" so that the merchant will check to be sure that it is you that is using the card. That is what I do.

  4. So when the sales clerk watches you sing for a purchase, they can compare signatures.

  5. So the salesperson can match the signature on the card to the signature on the credit card receipt.

  6. To verify your signature at point of use. To be safer you can write "ask for ID" instead then you have to show you picture ID when you use it so no one can use it besides you.

To the person below, it is NOT an urban myth. Even the credit card companies suggest it.
