Why do my silk clothing STINK!!?

i have several pieces of 100% silk clothing ,which i hand wash and lay flat to dry.They REEK horrible ...why do they stink and how do i fix this problem ...should i use tyhe dryer?

  1. I've heard u can pour vinegar into a cup or something and put it in your closet. I guess it absorbs or neutralizes odors as it evaporates.


  2. I have had this problem also, it is the raw silk, you can wash in one capful of white vinegar when washing it

  3. generally it's the raw silk that stinks....it IS essentially worm poo, if you think about it.  try using a little baking soda in the wash water and a little white vinegar in the rinse water. put in the dryer on air only option.  it should help the odor be less noticeable.

  4. They smell because of some silkworm gum that was not fully eliminated from the silk before spinning and making the cloth.

    You can -help- neutralize the odor (and set any dye in the fabric, keeping it from rubbing off on other clothing and skin) by soaking each piece or set (from the same color/dye lot) in a cold water and vinegar bath.

    Then wash and dry as instructed on the label. I would recommend against tossing them in the dryer.
