  1. I think I understand your question. I believe a majority of United States citizens call themselves Americans because they're not widely exposed to media content that references neighboring countries as being Americans, but Canadians or Mexicans. That may create an atmosphere of "us" and "them" mentality. Canada is a member of North America as is Mexico and the U.S. The term "America" does not and should not, in my opinion, reference only the United States.

I actually think Amerigo Vespucci landed on the shores of South America.

  2. Maybe cz A merry/mary can, when A merry's states r united. Bt this wasn't known b4 many merries gathered in the center of this continent.

  3. The English created separate states. And the revolutionaries united them. The tradition continues.

  4. Back before our name changed to United States it was simply the 13 colonies.  When we gained independence there was still much to do.  There was conflicts between the colonies as to representation, decisions to be made on many laws and even doubts by some that "Democracy" was the right choice of government.  Colonies actually threatened one another.  By the time the smoke settle and our founding fathers had to choose a name, they needed one that suggested uniformity and togetherness.

And of course America was North America before all this.

  5. For a long time the United States was the only country in the "New World". America is in the name of the country anyway.

  6. Huh? Really makes no sense!
