i have two options: a 2005 ford five hundred with only 36000 miles or a toyota highlander with 120000 miles, my dad is friends with the owner of the toyota says he has been meticulous with the cars up keep and just put 1500 dollar into the car by giving in a complete over haul, however the car is still extremely high mileage. i want a car that will be dependable, is it foolish to buy a car with that many miles? the ford is about 2000 more, however it does have a warranty ( though it expires soon). both car have automatic transmissions and are 3.0 V6's. the ford is selling for 10,000 and the highlander for 8,000 which vehicle do you think is the better buy? any opinions from mechanics or people familer with theses cars would be greatly appriciated, thank you!

  1. The Ford. Avoid Japanese cars at all cost, they are unreliable and unsafe.

  2. The Ford. HJR's right, j*p cars are unsafe as h**l. Not to mention about as uncomfortable as an old Western Flyer wagon.

  3. Look at car companies history. Fords been going downhill so fast in quality I'd be afraid of getting anything of theirs. Toyota on the other hand has a great rep and I'm not even a Toyota owner I drive a Mazda.

  4. Get the Ford.

  5. Ford   defoo..

  6. Get the Ford, I don't care how much one is rated next to the other, that great a difference in miles, makes all the difference.

  7. Well, toyotas are known for reliability, so i think that highlander can last another hundred thousand+ miles. My dad has a 2003 toyota and the original engine (the entire transmission) stopped working at about 290,000 miles  Fords arent as reliable and its value depreciates faster. Look at this car. Its only 2 grand more than a toyota with 100K+ miles. It might not be able to last as long as the highlander did.

It also kind of depends on what you need. If you need more space in your car, then go with the highlander (because it is bigger and can carry more stuff) If you just want a car that would get you from here to there, then the Ford will do. I actually think the Toyota is a better buy because you get more value for your money and it is less likely to have a lot of problems, but if you dont really need all that space, then go with the Ford.

  8. go for the ford,,,,

HJR you talk bollox, japenese are one of the most reliable cars on the market

  9. the ford.

first, a toyota is about 50K better than a Ford, which is the #1 rated american manufacturer for reliability (JD Powers, Consumer Reports) and your difference is far greater than that.  Also, the ford five hundred is the #1 rated safety car sold in the US and gets 30% better fuel economy than the highlander.
