  1. STREET: A public way or thoroughfare in a city or town, usually with a sidewalk or sidewalks. Such a public way considered apart from the sidewalks

AVENUE: A wide street or thoroughfare. A broad roadway lined with trees.

  2. A  street is a thoroughfare, usually including sidewalks that is lined with buildings, but avenue is a lane or private way or a  principle walk driveway to a house situated off a main road or a broad passageway bordered by trees.

I know many people may confuse with them.

    1- Road, 2-Street 3- Avenue, 4-Boulevard, 5-Lane.

  3. I believe a "street" is a major road where there are many houses and the "street" is long (big). An "avenue" is more of a closed up thing, with less houses (no more than 50-100 as I am aware) where people of a "higher status" (if you will) live. Avenues are more of a suburban thing whilst streets are more of a city thing.

That is how I know it. Hope I've been useful :)

  4. For all practical purposes there is no difference except as carried out locally.  In some towns all the streets run one direction and all the avenues run another, as in New York  5th Avenue runs NS, 49th Street EW.  Where size adds impression, Avenue is more so, but the street running in front of my house is 1200 yards long from beginning to end and cars have to pull over to the curb to pass if cars are parked on it.

A road often once ran a considerable distance between towns - Preston Road in Dallas ran from Dallas to the Preston Crossing of the Red River to Oklahoma and still is mostly intact in the form of a state highway.  River roads follow the low lands along a river, while the high road stays up above the flood plane and is more hilly to drive.

A boulevard almost always is divided down the middle by a reasonably substantial grassy area, more than just a median.

  5. A street is usually in a city and an avenue is usually tree lined in the suburbs.
